Storage Ideas for Jewelry

I guess you are here because you are looking for some storage Ideas for Jewelry.

For me, wood jewelry stands out among other materials because of its unique natural beauty and warmth. Each piece of Madera wood jewelry carries its own unique grain patterns, colors, and textures, making it truly one-of-a-kind.

While wood is strong and durable, it’s important to understand that despite this durability, it’s still susceptible to damage if not properly cared for.

Let me share some of the things that can affect your jewelry and then I’ll give you some helpful storage ideas for jewelry.

A few ways in which wood shows its softer side

Wood jewelry doesn't play well with water

Moisture bubbles, to explain that moisture isn't good for wood jewelry

Water is probably the biggest threat to wood jewelry. Wood is porous and is prone to absorbing moisture. Excessive exposure to moisture can lead to warping, swelling, or even mold growth on wood jewelry.

It’s important to protect wood jewelry from humidity and prolonged contact with damp surfaces. We highly recommend removing your jewelry before showering, doing the dishes, swimming or jumping in puddles :)

Wood jewelry can scratch

Although wood is pretty sturdy, it’s still susceptible to scratches and abrasions. Hard objects or rough surfaces can leave marks on the surface of wood jewelry, dulling its appearance and potentially causing permanent damage. Proper storage techniques help prevent contact with abrasive materials that can scratch the delicate surface of wood jewelry.

Wood jewelry can fade and discolor

Wood jewelry can experience color changes or fading over time if exposed to direct sunlight. Prolonged UV exposure can alter the natural tones and hues of the wood, leading to a loss of its original tone. Storing wood jewelry away from direct sunlight helps preserve its color and vibrancy.

Wood jewelry can be a bit temperature sensitive

Extreme temperatures can have adverse effects on wood jewelry. Rapid shifts between hot and cold temperatures can cause the wood to expand and contract, leading to cracks or warping. It is important to store wood jewelry in a stable temperature environment, avoiding exposure to excessive heat or cold.

Wood jewelry doesn't like harsh chemicals -- who does?

Just like metal jewelry, wood jewelry can react to chemicals present in perfumes, lotions, cleaning agents, and other substances commonly encountered in daily life. Chemicals can cause discoloration and staining. Proper storage ensures that wood jewelry remains protected from contact with such chemicals.

Now that you have a better understanding of the vulnerability of wood jewelry, you know that it’s important to store your pieces properly.

Need some storage ideas for jewelry?

Keep each piece of jewelry separate

Storage ideas for your jewelry

When possible, keep each piece of jewelry separate from the others (this really goes for any type of jewelry) to prevent scratching, tangling, or damage.  Consider using small compartments or dividers within a jewelry box to keep items organized and protected.

Use soft fabric pouches or lined jewelry boxes

Use soft fabric pouches or jewelry boxes lined with soft materials, such as felt or velvet, to store wood jewelry. These materials provide a cushion and help protect the jewelry from scratches or abrasions.

Use a jewelry display

A great storage idea for jewelry is a display. Using a jewelry display not only keeps your pieces untangled and separate, it can also look pretty awesome sitting on your dresser or hanging on your wall. You can find these everywhere now but here are a few organizers I love on etsy.

Pro Tip:  Clean and dry your wood jewelry before storage

Let’s face it, this is a big ask. Everyone is busy all day and tired at the end of the day, it’s hard enough to take the jewelry off sometimes - let alone clean and store it. But, it’s a good idea to do this once in a while.

Remove dirt, oils, and moisture with a soft cloth or microfiber cloth to gently wipe away any dirt, oils, or residue. As mentioned above don’t use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, they can damage the wood's surface.
